The Development Corner Developer Roundtable Producer's Letter: December 2007. Part 1: Coda Producer's Letter: December 2007. Part 1: Coda Gallenite 0 12/14/2007 11:31

I've never been a fan of saying goodbye, but it's time.  Today is my last day here at SOE.

In addition, I'd like to say thank you.

Thank you all for playing in these worlds that I've had the chance to touch over the past years.

Thank you for your boundless dedication and passion to what it is that we've all created here.

To many of you, thank you for your friendship.  A lot of you have been nothing short of an extended family over the past years.

I will miss you all.

The years of working on EverQuest and EverQuest II have been the highlight of my career, and have led to a significant personal milestone as well.

The release of EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark marks the 30th online games product that I've been fortunate enough to ship.  I sincerely hope that you've enjoyed what I was able to contribute to this amazing franchise as much as I've enjoyed being a part of it.

When asked what exactly I do for a living, I've referred to it many times as "having the greatest job working on the best teams in the world."

That's still true today.  It's possible for that to be true as well as to know that I've done the best work that I can on a world, and that it's time to hand the reins over to others whose best is still ahead of them.

It's time for me to see what else is out there waiting to be built.  It might even end up being something involving SOE.  Regardless, I'm sure we'll get a chance to meet up again, whether I'm making new MMOs, continuing to play them, or talking about them on the internet.

I wouldn't be leaving SOE if I wasn't positive that the responsibility for EQ2 was being left in the right hands.

Taking over for me is Bruce "Froech" Ferguson.  Some of you will remember his name from EQ2 beta, others of you may have met him at Fan Faires.  If you have met him, you know he's one of the most straightforward guys you'll ever be lucky enough to meet.

A few important things to know about Bruce and why I think SOE made the perfect call here:
  • Up until shortly after launch, he was EQ2's live producer.  This move is more of an overdue homecoming than anything else.
  • Before his production days, his background is also originally in working very closely with online communities as far back as text MUDs.  This community deserves nothing less.
  • He knows that with respecting communities comes respecting the worlds they've grown to love.  He's not the kind of person who's going to come in and start re-envisioning the game wholesale.
  • He has long standing relationships with all of the leads and production staff on EQ2.  In a number of cases, even longer than mine.
In short, Bruce is the perfect person to help this team continue to succeed in their mission of producing what we all know is the best MMO out there.

For my part, know that I count myself exceptionally fortunate to have been a part of such great endeavors, and I remain thankful for having been given the opportunity.

Until next time,

Scott Hartsman

We updated the shared dungeons and the dungeon instances in Kunark.   Whenever we say "dungeons" in the collective, we generally do mean both kinds.

(If we ever do need to differentiate while talking about them, which does occasionally happen, we try to stay consistent with "instances" vs "shared dungeons.")

In this case, it does mean both flavors.

Morning, all.

Our goal with Kunark dungeon experience gains is to make sure that the gains encourage people to go there, without forcing everyone to go there to have fun.  That's the balance we're looking to strike.

We've been keeping an eye on both the objective, globally recorded experience data from the first week of Kunark being live, as well as the subjective feedback regarding Kunark experience grants, through the many styles that people play.

Many of you have pointed out that the exp given from dungeonning feels too low.  In the live environment, we agree that is the case.  The data backs this up as well.

In making the reality more aligned with the overall goal, Kunark dungeon experience gains have just been boosted on all of the live servers.  They will remain this way throughout the holiday weekend as we see how the new numbers work out.  Your feedback, as always, is appreciated.

And for all of the US folks, have an excellent holiday weekend. :)

Roleplaying Antonia Bayle Antonia Bayle Status - 11/20/07 Antonia Bayle Status - 11/20/07 Gallenite 0 11/20/2007 11:13

Greetings, AB.  We wanted to give you an update on the status of your server.  As you all know just by watching level chat, there's been a huge population influx.  There are more people getting online, and they're staying online longer.

When we release expansions, we do budget for usage increases -- It's a standard part of the process.  We look over the kinds of increases we've seen with past releases, then add a buffer for safety.

The usage patterns post-ROK have gone beyond our expectation on all servers, but what's been happening to AB in particular is about two and a half times larger than our most optimistic projections.

As a result, there are data transaction backlogs during certain peak periods - Most noticeably when people try to log in, zone, or use the broker.  Here's what's been going on over the past few days to rectify this:

  • This weekend was spent trying to treat immediate symptoms while working on a more permanent plan to address the ongoing usage.  There were a number of backend optimizations and reconfigurations made which did help, but they didn't completely address the problem.  The servers did last with higher and higher load each day, but eventually did show problems this weekend as well as on Monday, as you're well aware.
  • As of very early this morning we're through round #1 of increasing your server's storage hardware.  New hardware, dedicated 100% to AB.  This lets more transactions be processed, and faster.  Given the readings that we're seeing from the databases this morning, this looks like it will be quite a help on its own.
  • As of late tonight we'll be through round #2 of storage hardware additions, increasing the capacity even further.
  • As of a hotfix scheduled for tomorrow morning, you'll notice that historical broker events don't load until you go to look at them.  Previously, they had been loading upon login, which was causing unnecessary stress on the DBs.  We continue to look into which other informational loads can be safely deferred, to continue to reduce load here.

We'll continue monitoring your server throughout this process.  There are multiple teams working on this as their highest priority, and we're coming up with additional moves to make if we need to.

As it stands, things are looking up, and we'll remain here making sure that we're doing everything we can.

Best,

- Scott

Thank you very much for your understanding.

Hi, folks - I've asked the marketing team that handles sales, downloads, retailers, and online for the simple explanation of how this works via the various means of distribution -- Hope this clears things up.

- Scott

_______

From retailers, the Burynai Seeker House Pet is only available for customers who pre-order online.  There should be disclaimers on the retailers' sites.   This is the only way that the retailers can manage the accounts to distribute the keys via email.  The store employees should be instructed to tell people this when asked, but this doesn't always occur with in-store preorders.  We try to make sure it's as clear as possible.

In short:

  • Anyone who pre-orders from a retailer online should get an email from the retailer with the upgrade item key.  The game key is in the physical box.
  • If you pre-order the digital download from the station store, the preorder grant is seamless.
  • If you pre-ordered digitally through Direct2Drive, you should get two keys as well (upgrade and game).

Hi, folks - I wanted to check in on this one.  There are a number of situations that cause this same error that have been addressed since this bug was first reported.

  Re: Loss of ability to use 1280x720 via direct .ini file mods

Hi, folks - We found what suddenly caused this problem for people who tweaked their own ini files to gain access to resolutions that EQ2 doesn't "officially" support:  In GU39 we fixed an A-class bug that occurred when video cards are swapped and the person's previous resolution is no longer supported.  The fix to that is what broke this.

Given that the popularity of 1280x720 is likely only going to increase over time, we've added support in the video options for that resolution.  Seems to be the smart way to handle it.

Also, for people who want to .ini hack even stranger resolutions (Matrox, for instance, has a 2400x600 that at least one player uses), we'll be introducing a new ini file switch that lets .ini hackers tell the game: "I really know what I'm doing; Stop trying to be smarter than me and just try to work with this resolution" and the game will just trust whatever you tell it.  (possibly to new and exciting consequences if done wrong, but without risk, where's the fun of hacking parameters?)

These changes haven't been released yet, but will go out in an upcoming hotfix.  Stay tuned to the patch notes for when that happens.

Apologies for the inconvenience, and hope the fixes here solve the assortment of odd-resolution problems.

Speaking of the fire, I just posted this in the beta forums to let folks there know why we've been holding off on beta updates, but I figured others might be interested as well:

For those not keeping up on the wildfire news from San Diego:

* We're not having people come into work, as the mayor's asked that people stay off the streets for the last couple days.  There are still quite a few staff who've been evacuated from their homes, and a number more of us who are keeping an eye out waiting for a call to head out.

* We do have emergency and critical live-service personnel on site, but services remain limited since those departments aren't at full staff either.  (Operations, CS, Tech Support, etc)

* SDG&E is also requesting that people conserve power wherever possible, which means that we've had all of our internal servers down for the duration as well.

As it stands, SOE is safe and not directly in the path of anything that's moving.  The nearest fire is about 8 miles north of the office -- For those keeping track at home, that's the Witch Creek fire (http://media.signonsandiego.com/fires/).

We'll get updates resuming just as soon as we can.

Your patience, as always, is seriously appreciated.

  Since the release of the Bottled Intellect reward item (currently: 100% power recovery, usable once per 24 hours), the concerns regarding the power of this item have not gone unheard.

Legends of Norrath is a fun addition to EQ and EQ2.  On the game-side, our goal is to make sure that the item rewards are interesting and make people happy to find them, yet not so powerful that guild communities view them as mandatory for their members to possess.

Random item rewards from LON are definitely not intended to be part of the expected upgrade path for EQ2 customers, meaning that we will not be balancing the difficulty of the game around them.

This item in its current form in the beta for LON has stirred much debate, and rightfully so.  It was initially viewed as acceptable in the context of a "last-ditch, one in a million" that someone might be lucky enough to have.  In the discussions since, it's become obvious that's not how it's being perceived, or how it would be used in practice if it remained in its current state once LON goes live.

The modified Bottled Intellect will appear as follows:
  • +15% power recovery
  • 10% mana reduction cost for one minute
  • Usable once per three hours
I wanted to release this information to the boards first, before the item was changed in both the web site and the game, which will be coming in an upcoming update before the live launch of LON, currently scheduled for next week.

Thank you very much,

- Scott

  Good mornin'

We had originally planned on seeing if a CE was going to be possible.  It came down to the number of SKUs we'd need to deal with.

I'm sad to say but the reality was that it turned into something we won't be able to do.

The good news is that we're planning on going with both a retail-all-expansions SKU as well as a download-all-expansions SKU.

Hopefully not having the CE is made up by the fact that we'll be having a download-all-expansions SKU from day one, which are traditionally much better at bringing more people into the game than a second, more expensive retail SKU. SMILEY

Yes. SMILEY  You'll be able to challenge people across alignment, across server, and between EQ and EQ2, even on PvP servers.

The Development Corner Developer Roundtable Random Fan Faire thoughts while waiting to fly home Random Fan Faire thoughts while waiting to fly home Gallenite 0 08/05/2007 08:58

I'm here in Las Vegas a couple hours before having to fly out and appear to be wide awake and in a writing mood for no rational reason at all.

I'm always a little sad when Fan Faire ends.  Most of us who come out here are extremely excited (some a little bit nervous) in the days leading up to it, have a blast while we're here, then end up returning home feeling both exhausted and invigorated at the same time.

The People:  It's one of my favorite things, anywhere, to be able to wander around and talk with so many different people from all over the world.  Gamers, friends of gamers, familiar faces who've been to lots of fan faires, and the surprising number of people who came to Las Vegas this weekend for their first one.

The only thing wrong with any of it is that there are more interesting people here than anyone could possibly talk to in only three days.

I forget whose blog I saw it on yesterday, but it's really true: When you see a fan faire badge, you know it's going to be a friendly face.  At every one that I've been to, that's undoubtedly the core of what makes Fan Faire such a great time.

One of the most common sounds at Fan Faire, right behind "animated discussion and enthusiastic storytelling," is undoubtedly laughter.

(Not to point fingers, but sometimes even during panels...Coyote.)

The Parties:  There is no doubt that SOE throws the best parties around.  This year the SOE event experts Jen and Lauren had to pull off ComicCon, the SOE Block Party, and Fan Faire all within the same week, and not many get to see just how much work goes into making them all happen.

The first night at the VooDoo Lounge and the second night's pool party were both excellent times.  Both places were big enough to where people could either hang out in the crowd or find a quiet spot to just relax and talk with friends.

It was a great time. The only thing that went wrong was that they eventually had to end.

Bringing back the Karaoke band from Atlanta was a very cool touch.  Seeing Rothgar's customarily modest and quiet wife get up on stage and completely own up Sweet Child of Mine, to the utter astonishment of her coworkers, was worth it all by itself.

And while I'd never condone the unceremonious dumping of community managers into large, chlorinated bodies of water, Grimwell took it with his customary good humor and class.

The Wedding: When I first heard about the idea of someone having an actual wedding here at Fan Faire, I was a little skeptical.  Being a big fan of anything online that brings people together, I thought it was a brilliant idea to have a wedding simultaneously online and IRL, but would it turn out cheesy?

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/20...i_thee_wed.html

Hopefully video of it will turn up on the net somewhere. From where I sat, the crowd reaction when Vader led the procession down the immense aisle past 1600 or so people felt deafening.

John Blakely and Chris Cao, both formerly of the EQ2 team and now down at our Austin studio, summed it up the best:  "Okay.  That was really badass."

Kelly and Nathan: Congratulations to the both of you.  It was great meeting you guys.  Thanks so much for sharing that with all of us at Fan Faire.  And to your guildmates: The post-wedding snowball assault was a nice touch.  Way better than rice.  You guys cracked up at least a dozen of us EQ2 devs in the audience who realized what was happening.

Massive props to EQ2's own PR expert Taina Rodriguez for going way above and beyond the call by including the responsibilities of "Wedding Planner" into her already overloaded Fan Faire duties, and then hitting it clear out of the park.

Smed's Address: The entire video is already up on the net, so there's really nothing of substance to add here, but I do want to say that I was impressed with how well everything was received.

Working on the inside, we see presentations like this at our own company meetings and at press events throughout the year, but bringing the extended and enhanced version of the show to Fan Faire, to lay everything out in front of the people who really matter, was a great thing to see happen.

The energy in a room like that compared to a more sedate press demo or company meeting is something you have to be there to appreciate.  I literally couldn't stop myself from grinning during the video for The Agency.

(Although that might have been because I knew the line "What...the..." was coming, and kind of figured how everyone would react...)

I sincerely hope we do more things like that in the future.

The Costumes:  Seeing how the costume contest has grown past solely EQ costumes is really kind of sobering, in a cool way.  It's easy to forget how far things have come in the past seven years.  Pirate costumes, Matrix outfits, and even an Agency spy.

This year added the ability for everyone attending to vote for their favorite by txt message.  There's really no better way to judge this.  I don't know who at SOE thought of that or who made it happen, but that was really slick.

The Panels:  This time we decided to take a different tack with our panels and Q&A's.  Where we usually only talk about things coming out within the next couple months, this time we went way past basic Q&A and shared a lot more about future projects than we've done in the past, including a few things that are going to be worked on clear over the next year.

The reason we usually don't talk too far ahead about projects in-progress is that with the longer term ones it's hard to know exactly how or when they'll all come together and the last thing we want to do is disappoint anyone.

This time, while we didn't entirely throw caution to the wind, we did share quite a bit about things like Guild Housing, Combat Music, the New Map System, New Character Models, and dozens of smaller things.

We do try hard to make sure that everything we're saying is accurate, but when we're all so excited about sharing news in the completely unscripted and free-form parts of the sessions, and everyone who rushes to post is anxious to be the one to break the news, sometimes the subtle parts do get lost in translation.

Once we get home and can see what kind of information, comments, and questions are out there we'll put together a post of clarifications and corrections and get it out there for everyone.

Time to get moving.  Better wrap this up.

To the devs who prepared the cool stuff to show off and talk about:  Thanks for doing this on top of all of the normal, excellent work that you do each and every day.

To the Community, Marketing, PR, and especially Operations folks who turned completely empty hotel ballrooms, conference rooms, and hallways into the best party of the year in under twelve hours: Saying "thank you" barely scratches the surface.

And to everyone who attended fan faire:  Thank you all so much for coming out.  I hope you truly do understand how important you are, and how grateful we are you're all here.

Until next year,

- Scott

Thanks for the feedback on all of this so far.   There are still more fixes going on, but so far the following quest targets mentioned here and in /feedback from test server have been taken care of in Nektulos.

By "taken care of" I mean that there should now be sufficient dedicated targets that don't require you to camp unrelated creatures.  I agree with the observation that having quest targets on shared spawns just doesn't make for good gameplay.

Addressed in the initial test update:

* Beavers (from one of the earliest posts)
* Forest Leapers (from one of the earliest posts)
* Cackling Cadavers (from one of the earliest posts)
* Non heroic quest targets around Nek castle
* Savage Mist Grinnin

Addressed in our dev build, not on test yet:

* Patchwork Man
* Gul'Thex Mystics
* Decaying Flesh Being
* Sullian Fairies
* Shade Spinner
* Mist Grinnin
* Murkbloom Watcher
* Nerius Hermit
* Spiders on the beach whose name I forget

More to come.

There's a little confusion about this one, and I'll offer what help that I can.

Most special promos only hit people who meet certain criteria.  I don't have those criteria handy, so I can't get into what they were.  (Not trying to hide anything - Promos, especially those that cross multiple games, are largely handled by departments outside dev teams.)

The best things that people can do to improve (not guarantee) chances of being selected for any promo are:

1) Have an updated, working email address in their account.  This is the most common issue - Many don't.

2) Be opted in to receiving promotional mails.  We don't sell mail lists.  Our privacy policy is a good one, and the folks who actually send the mails are nearly religious about making certain that people who have opted out don't see mail that they've said no to.

Hit the "My Account" link at the top of this page to have a look at your settings.

For those who have seen Antonica and Nektulos in their GU37 version on TEST SERVER (please do not comment on the current state of live here! This is for the test update that just went to Test Server this morning!)...

As with the Commonlands thread from last time, which generated many useful posts, let's do the same thing this time for Antonica and Nektulos.

* Any quests that have none or too-few targets?

* Non-kill quests that can't be completed?

* Anything else outright broken?

* Anything else that should be addressed?

Thanks,

- Scott

Now Im wondering somthing... when can you use the key? Is their some special Equinox session further down the road, 1 week before release? Or is it day 1 beta?

We haven't gone into specific beta schedules yet, but the idea is pretty simple:

It depends entirely on volume and how we have to batch people in due to the number of applicants and purchasers.  However, we don't have anything lame like a "one day, last minute" magazine-special beta or anything like that planned.  Promise.

There will be smaller, focused closed betas of course, but the idea is to make sure that both standard applicants and folks who get in because of the magazine are taken care of as equitably as we possibly can once we get beyond the very-small closed beta phase.

The Development Corner In Testing Feedback Will buy back ever be implemented? Re:Will buy back ever be implemented? Gallenite 0 07/18/2007 21:58

If I didn't know them all, I'd start to think the previous three red names in the thread were hopped up on goofballs, myself.

It's not a bad joke.  It just takes a day to get to the punchline.

Morning, folks.  I'm up in LA at E3 at the moment, but we got word that a maintenance not on the game side ended up taking down more servers than it was supposed to, hence the lack of warning.

Apologies for the unexpected downtime.  Those doing the maintaining are in the process of making sure everything's all right, and getting them all back up.

Yes. SMILEY

For some reason yesterday, I kept forgetting at least one thing to talk about each time I talked with someone, so I had scribbled notes nearby.

I bet it had something to do with getting up at 6 to make it down to the hall in time.

Really, 6am is generally best viewed from the perspective of the night before.  Not the day of.

The Development Corner In Testing Feedback Commonlands population tweaks (GU36) Re:Commonlands population tweaks (GU36) Gallenite 0 06/19/2007 18:49

Most of the comments from this thread have been acted on -- Some of them even before they were posted!  (e.g. Rama'nai and a couple others were caught by the time the first changes went up.)

The general rule for Commonlands quests appears to have indeed been that if it was travel only, it didn't offer Achievement gain.  Most of those quests do now offer achievements, since traveling long distances in hostile areas most definitely doesn't mean "no danger."

I saw a couple /feedbacks come in from Test that reminded me to post this.  If you're playing through Commonlands and having issues, please do send /bugs and /feedback on them, or post here.  Thanks to the couple of you that already are. SMILEY

We did some minor touchup work on Commonlands this cycle.   Nothing major, just trying to make what's there more usable for people of that level range.

Please do report as many Quest and NPC details as you can for problems like:

1) Not enough critters exist for quest
2) Had to camp an annoyingly rare named for a quest
3) Some quest creature didn't spawn at all

Thanks,

- Scott

Is there any eta on it? i know it got to be soon with a new expansion coming up. i dont think they would make the expansion with the old system just to rewrite it too. any idea?

It's still in progress, and it's moving right along.  We'll be making quite a bit more noise about it once its release gets nearer.

As much as I wish I had more details to give at this time, the best that I can say for now is: "There are some really dedicated people putting in a whole lot of hours in on it, and yes, we really want it out there too." SMILEY
