MxO actually managed to appear in PC Gamer. I know, it's a miracle. Some wise player actually wrote a player review and got it printed.
I won't type out the entire thing; In summary it emphasised the things that make this game good; "the green flutter of code begins to fade from my view, a small gathering of pigeons fly into the sky as the sounds of footsteps emanates (sic) from where they were once standing, While I watch a...merovingian soldier fire a hail of bullets my way"
The review wasn't perfectly objective, but it was inspiring and factual. "I can fight now as well, I will no longer get stuck in a wall after a five second battle"
The reader gave it a score of 79% (which seems fair).
PC gamer's response is what irritates me:
"Original score: 48% (Given at launch of MxO)
PCG reponds: We're glad you like it but to us TMO is still as off-putting as that giant flower at Kew Gardens that hardly ever blooms and smells like carrion. You Know the one."
Now, I know they didn't even bother playing the game (they don't have the time..too busy kissing Blizzard and NCSoft's asses) again to see if it actually had changed.
So lets inform them of the error of their ways (notably calling it TMO ). If you want to respond send a letter to:
Cables, PC GAMER, 29 Monmouth Street, Bath, BA1 2DL or email: Cables@futurenet.co.uk (Don't spam it unless you want to look like a cretin)
Bias-ness = teh suck.
Sending several angry emails complaing of said bias-ness = teh rox.
Do it now people!
*CENSORED* is TMO?
"Original score: 48% (Given at launch of MxO) PCG reponds: We're glad you like it but to us TMO is still as off-putting as that giant flower at Kew Gardens that hardly ever blooms and smells like carrion. You Know the one." I can see the reason for the original score, at launch there were many glaring bugs, and the game definantly failed to live up to the promises and expectations. However, you wrote that it is "still as off-putting", and I'd like to know when was the last time you played MxO? MxO was my first MMORPG, and I've since played many others. SWG and WoW being the primary ones. But something always keeps me coming back to MxO. I couldnt tell you exactly what it is, maybe its the fact that despite its age, MxO still has some of the best graphics out there, especially with my cranked up useropts.cfg file. Maybe its because theres not alot of variety out there when it comes to post modern cyber-punk themed games. Or maybe its because the game is coming around, and I can see that. Live events are happening again on a much more frequent basis, the combat revamp -improved- things drasticly, that sort of thing. I encourage you to try the game out again and rethink your opinion. -NightTrace, Level 50 Riflemen/sniper, Mega City Department of Energy, Recursion
Dear Cables at PC Gamer, I would like to deeply disagree with your "response" to the player-review of The Matrix Online. And just to clarify, it's "MXO", not "TMO". First of all, have you even played the game in the last six months? Lots of content AND BUG FIXES have come out since the horribly painful launch back in March of 2005. Do you still hold the belief that after a year and a half that the game hasn't changed at all? It is NOT, in any way, shape, or form, the same game it was in March of 2005. It's so much better. All of the major bugs have been fixed. Lag has been cutdown tenfold (unless you're in a VERY heavily populated area with over 75 people), the Hyperjump sound looping bug is gone, most missions spawn correctly now and are completable, and most camera issues during interlock have been addressed. Interlock, you say? The game received a total combat revamp, but the revamp was actually successful compared to SWG. Interlock is what it should be now: faster, easier to understand, and, most of all, FUN. It's amazing being able to look at the screen and see your character connecting with your opponent. The combat revamp transformed the game entirely. Can you say that you've dueled Morpheus or Seraph? Can you say that the Oracle gave you a cookie? Can you say you had a direct involvement in continuing one of the greatest storylines ever created? Granted, the game has a few glaring points. The mission system is monotonous, but a quest system is currently being developed to alleviate some of the tediousness. When lagging in interlock, your RSI sometimes faces a different way than your opponent and the animation gets screwed up, but most of the time that is a rare occurence. New content has been added, too. The White Hallways are now accessible, and organization constructs are now in-game. The level 50 Construct 01 has had a revamp: it now has a mini-quest system which takes quite a bit of time to complete and gives players something to do in return for a very worthwhile reward. Pandora's Box has been added, which is a 4 arc super quest. A Mission Archive is now available, too, which lets you replay past Critical Missions to update yourself on the storyline. You also receive "tickets" for completing these critical missions, which, after completing an entire chapter or your organization's arc, you receive special items that correlate to that chapter or organization. Please re-review the Matrix Online, or at least retract your statement about it being "off-putting". And next time, when you smack a game, be sure you've got the name right. It's "MXO", not "TMO". Sincerely yours, Anamodiel - Vector-Hostile HvCFT Veritas Furious Angels
