Here's a quick guide for those starting the Trader Engineer grind and want to know the various ways to do it.

First of all, grab an entertainer "Flush with Success" XP buff before starting any grinding.  It grants you the most XP compared to any of the other crafting XP buffs, even Droid Tech.  FYI, the effects do not stack if you get multiple XP buffs (thanks Roycroft for the research!).

Quickest Grind (but costly):

  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Seven survey devices (practice mode), using 133 Metal and 56 Mineral units
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: 56 Crafting devices (practice mode), using 896 Metal, 448 Mineral and 560 Chemical units
  3. CL 10 to CL 18: 32 personal harvesters (practice mode nets 16.95xp/unit with no buff), using 4640 Metal, 1440 Steel, 1280 Low-Grade Ore, 640 Non-Ferrous Metal and 320 Aluminum units
  4. CL 18 to CL 90: 1122 Vehicles (practice mode nets 4.25xp/unit with no buff, but it's a lot of XP per crafting session), using 1,795,200 Non-Ferrous Metal and 7,180,800 Ferrous Metal units, assuming you are making swoops
  5. Resource Requirements (unbuffed): 7,188,413 Steel (or Iron w/ 1440 Steel); 1,796,160 Aluminum (or Copper w/ 320 Aluminum); 1,280 Low-Grade Ore; 560 Chemical
Grinding with Profit:
  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Seven survey devices (practice mode), using 133 Metal and 56 Mineral units
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: 56 crafting devices (practice mode), using 896 Metal, 448 Mineral and 560 Chemical units
  3. CL 10 to CL 18: 32 personal harvesters (practice mode nets 16.95xp/unit with no buff), using 4640 Metal, 1440 Steel, 1280 Low-Grade Ore, 640 Non-Ferrous Metal and 320 Aluminum units
  4. CL 18 to CL 90: Vehicles (no practice mode; make actual deeds and sell them), will cost slightly more resources than the Quickest Grind route
Economical Grind (but longer):
  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Seven survey devices (practice mode), using 133 Metal and 56 Mineral units
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: 56 crafting devices (practice mode), using 896 Metal, 448 Mineral and 560 Chemical units
  3. CL 10 to CL 54: 793 personal harvesters (practice mode nets 16.95xp/unit with no buff), using 114,985 Metal, 35,685 Steel, 31,720 Low-Grade Ore, 15,860 Non-Ferrous Metal and 7,930 Aluminum units
  4. CL 54 to CL 90: 3343 Advanced Droid Frame Units (practice mode nets 19.95xp/unit with no buff), using 501,450 Steel and 234,010 Fibreplast units
  5. Resource Requirements (unbuffed): 653,653 Steel; 234,570 Fibreplast; 31,720 Low-Grade Ore; 23,790 Aluminum
Comments/suggestions are welcome.  Thanks for all the input so far!

Wow, I love it!  There seem to be various length guides about things that could be truncated (I'm guilty myself), but this is very refreshing, well put together, and informative!

Bravo!

I think you should clarify what vehicles to grind with in the "Quickest Grind" section. I believe there's been some contention as to which vehicle is best, Swoop, Speederbike, or X34. If you're grinding for profit, then any vehicle would do but I think its safe to say that Swoops sell the best.  As far as quickest is concerned, it has been my experience that X34's yields better xp for less resources than the swoop or speederbike.

I leveled my Engineer on TCP with X34's and found it to be the best yield.

can u be more specific on the xp buff u should get, theres quite a few of them.

does the flush with success buff work with crafting xp?

if yes which crafting buff should u get, advanced assembly or droid tech?

Actually if I recall correctly, the AB-1/V-35/XP-38 vehicles seem to give you the best XP to resource ratio.  I'll check that out next time I'm on.

You'll want Droid Tech in your buff for XP gain.  I believe Flush with Success is for combat only (and I doubt it stacks), but check in the Ent's forums for details.

About how many resources do you need for the fastest grind?

A good question, to which I haven't researched.  When I have some spare cycles, I'll do the math.

Grinding with Profit:
  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Survey devices (practice mode)
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: Crafting devices (practice mode)
  3. CL 10 to CL 18: Personal harvesters (practice mode nets 16.95xp/unit with no buff)
  4. CL 18 to CL 90: Vehicles (make actual deeds and sell them)
Quickest Grind:
  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Survey devices (practice mode)
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: Crafting devices (practice mode)
  3. CL 10 to CL 18: Personal harvesters (practice mode nets 16.95xp/unit with no buff)
  4. CL 18 to CL 90: Vehicles (practice mode nets 4.25xp/unit with no buff, but it's a lot of XP per crafting session)
Grinding with High XP Gain per Resource Unit Used in Mind:
  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Survey devices (practice mode)
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: Crafting devices (practice mode)
  3. CL 10 to CL 54: Personal harvesters (practice mode nets 16.95xp/unit)
  4. CL 54 to CL 90: Advanced Droid Frame Units (practice mode nets 19.95xp/unit with no buff; 22.9xp/unit with buff)

Comments/suggestions are welcome.  This is my experiences fairly recently on the TCPrime server.

If I craft the Advanced Droid Frame Units, I get 5046 for each craft, while a swoop gives me 18354 for each craft, at level 54. In both cases I have ent buff. So If I have to craft 4 times more Droid Frame Units to exceed what I can get with 1 swoop craft, how would this be faster grind? I can make 4 swoops in same amount of time as I can the Droid Units thus giving me 73,416 xp compared to 20,184 xp for the Droid Units. Will the Droid Units take less resource, yes, but on a time basis, I will say swoops are better.

I chose to use Swoops to craft simply because it only requires 2 types of resources compared to 3 or 4 resources for other vehicles. Thus less resource clicking and more crafting. Also If you dont have the cash to buy 2 mineral (1 harvester on each of 2 resource) and 1 chemical harvesters then having only 2 mineral harvesters will get you the 2 resources to make swoops (1 harvester on each of the 2 needed types of resource).

Emphasized something in Rasal's OP for You, please try to read it more carefully.
So what is the question again?

Is it not a sad thing that any the trader professions needs to be grinded at all and cannot be played and have fun to start with. Only Structure Traders seems to have a nice leveling as they actually can sell stuff with profit from day one.

That is why I write Trader Profession Progress Proposal which is posted in the Domestic forum as I hate cross posting. Chime in there if you have nice ideas on how to avoid the need for speed-grinding but rather to be able to play and have fun during a normal leveling.

  1. CL 1 to CL 4: Survey devices (practice mode)
  2. CL 4 to CL 10: Crafting devices (practice mode) 546 xp w/o buff, 743 xp w/ buff
  3. CL 10 to CL 18: Personal harvesters (practice mode) 4237 xp w/o buff, 4873 xp w/ buff
  4. CL 18 to CL 90: Vehicles (practice mode) 18354 xp w/ buff for the speeder bike which requires less resources than the swoop
  5. CL 18 to CL 90: X-34 Speeder (practice mode) 17955 w/o buff, 20648 xp w/ buff
  6. When crafting the X-34, ensure you're standing in front of the Weapon, Droid, and General Item Crafting Station or the schematic won't show up on your tool. Something that took me a minute or two to remember. SMILEY

I respec'd an alt yesterday from a Master Entertainer to a DE, he dropped to level 5 and I thought he'd be level 1, lucky me! With the buff I went up to level 30 in less than an hour and a half making Clothing and Armor Crafting Tools, Wind Powered Harvestors, and Speeder Bikes. I didn't realize just how much metal I'd go thru so now I'm going to place some harvs and start mining it on my own with some spare lots, something I should have done at level 1 to help in my later levels. I ran thru half a mil in resources in an hour last night just trying to hit level 30, I had no idea how expensive the grind would be. It's quite costly when you're not harvesting your own resources and paying 2-5 cpu for grinding quality stuff.

My alt is an rp'er of sorts, I'm in love with the jawanese race and have three jawa chars. A Droid Engineering Jawa only makes sense since he steals droids for a living! I'm having fun with DE!

Here's some pics of my nubs:

Next I need to start making a work shop like Rasal did, it's quite impressive!

The Advanced Droid Frame Units are only 5604 xp in practice mode with the droid tech & xp buff. Their complexity level is only 15, where as the X-34 is 25 complexity for 20648 xp. I just tried to craft a Doctor's Bag since it's complexity level is 30 for more xp and none was granted. This makes me assume that I must craft droid related items for droid engineer crafting xp, any crafting xp won't cut it.

The Advanced Droid Motive system is 1026 xp in practice mode with the droid tech & xp buff. Its complexity level is 28, almost double that of the ADFU mentioned above, yet it's less than 1/5th the xp.

The DZ70 Advanced Droid is 1377 xp in practice mode with the droid tech & xp buff. It's complexity level is 22. You'd think that crafting a droid as a droid engineer would give you alot of xp, it doesn't. X-34 vehicles it is! :/

Also, where do we find the Droid Defensive Module Harness? I couldn't find it anywhere in our profession tree. Is this an item that another class crafts for us? I just found out using the forum seaerch. They are the Droid Armor modules, Level 1 - 6

If conserving resources isn't your concern, or if you plan in selling the vehicles you grind, then vehicles are the way to go for grinding.  If you want to use as little resources as possible, then ADFU's are your schematic.  That's why I listed the different options.  And if you go vehicles, you get even more XP from the "newer" vehicles such as the V-35 or AB-1.

A droid defensive module harness if just a fancy way of saying "droid armor module slot".

I've been grinding the X-34 since I got the schem for it, I went from cl 5 up to 62 in roughly five hours of atkb grinding. I thought I'd try some other schems just to see what's up and it appears that the vehicles are the way to go!
