Guide: Understanding "No Trade" items

In many online RPG games, there are some items that will have restrictions on trading them.  This can be frustrating for players as they may not understand why such a restriction has been placed on an item that they have obtained, but cannot use and cannot trade to another player.

This guide seeks to address the common reasons behind this restriction and alieviate some of the frustration that this system causes.

What are you going to do about No Trade? Players don't like it . –Sassums

Loche: No-Trade isn't going away. It is also not a true statement to say that all players dislike like it. "No-Trade" is a standard game mechanic, and has always been in the game.  The very first no-trade item, the Special Edition Goggles, was there at launch. We have reduced the number of no-trade items going into the game. In the past nearly all of the rewards for GMF, Lifeday, and EFoL would have been no-trade. Additionally, we have removed the no-trade flags from some of the existing "no-trade" items in the game (Xeno furniture, etc). We have a system going in to allow you to consume your once per account item and re-claim it on another character.

(Before reading.. BoA=Bind on Account)

I see where SOE is coming from on this one(what Loche wrote below) which is perhaps easier or more difficult compared to what WoW has been doing for certain items.

WoW(World of Warcraft) has been adding the tag/status of "Bind on Account" to certain items which are otherwise "No Trade" to other players except the characters on the account that possesses the "Bind on Account" item.

"No Trade" decorative items, ship chassis, armor(excluding Elder Jedi robes), weapons(excluding Lightsabers), Special Edition items(Decorative Items, Vehicles, SE Goggles, Wearables, etc...) should be converted to "Bind on Account" which again is the status where it can be traded between characters on the same account through dropping it in a structure that another character on your account possesses without the hassle of the cooldown, and what not of the new email code to transfer items.

However the "Bind on Account" tag isn't to be taken completely literally. It it binded to the galaxy of the character the item was originally received on, once it was received on a character on Bloodfin for example.. Once claimed on a character on Bloodfin it can only be traded to your other characters on that account on the Bloodfin galaxy.

The 1 exception to this is if the character on... again as an example, Bloodfin, were to transfer to another galaxy. If that character which is not necessarily the character you originally claimed it on, was in possession of a BoA item, would be able to trade it to alts he would make in the future or already had on the target galaxy.

Unless you transferred the original character or an alt on said galaxy back to Bloodfin depending on which is in possession of the BoA item, you can no longer have it on the original galaxy unless you transfer it back.

We had several discussions yesterday about this conundrum. DevH came up with what I feel is a very elegant and praise-worthy solution. We are going to implement code to allow you to consume the trash can, so that it may be reclaimed on another character on your account.

It will still be a once per account non-tradable item, but now you can choose to move it to whatever character on that account you feel needs it. There will be time limitations on how often you can consume it to get your /claim back.

We have discussed a similiar mechanic internally for a little while now. When/if something along these lines gets done/scheduled, I will let you (the players) know.

Badgersmaker also PM'd me earlier about a request to allow admins decorave (use /move commands) on someone else's dropped no-trade item.

I forwarded it on to my programming team to discuss feasibility. Again, once we have any to elaborate, we will let you all know.

Main issues:

Intended design, restrictions and use for various item tags:

  • No Trade

Prevents trade of an item to another player.  You can only drop a "No Trade" item in a structure if you are the structure OWNER.

If you are on the administrators list, but not the house owner, you cannot drop or manipulate (move/rotate/pickup) the item in the structure.  If you attempt to do so you will receive the following system message: "You do not have permission to access that container".

You cannot directly place a No Trade item into a container that is placed in a structure, doing so results in a pop-up window explaining this restriction.  You can however pick the container up and have the container and "No Trade" item in your inventory, drag the No Trade item into the container and then drop the container into the structure. (Bug or intended?)

One of the most contentious issue of No Trade revolves around players wanting to use "No Trade" items as house decorations that were gained by characters that are not the Owner of the structure in which they wish to place the item.

  • Bio-link

Prevents re-use of an item by another player.  Does not prevent trade of the item.  Effectively used as a replacement for decay which avoids a chance of item destruction.  No restrictions on structure placement.

  • Unique

Prevents a player from owning more than one of these items.  Also prevents placement in a structure, possibly to prevent circumventing this restriction.  Some items such as the Heroic Jewellery "Box of Achievements" must be in the inventory in order for Jewellery purchases to work.

Items covered in this guide:

  • Legacy Quest Rewards
  • Trading Card Game Loot
  • Jedi Cloaks and Robes
  • Veteran Rewards
  • Schematics from Mustafarian Instances and the Chu Gon Dar cube
  • Anniversary rewards
  • Glowing Items, Commendations and Midlithe crystals

  • Legacy Quest Rewards

Many of the rewards for completing stages of the Legacy Quest are marked as "No Trade".

Why? - The Legacy Quest was one of the first quests to be implemented after the NGE, at this time many items were made "No Trade" to ensure that players took part in the content, rather than just buying the rewards.

The rewards have been subject to "Mudflation" over time, that is to say that they no longer are as powerful as newer items, but the No Trade flag remains.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items? - Requires players to complete the quest content on the character that they wish to use the reward on.  Could be said to provide content for decorators.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - Perhaps a case could be made for "No Trade" to be removed from the purely decorative items, such as "a re-assembled R2 unit", but being able to trade the more useful rewards, such as the 4500 Heal Kits would lead to players farming Entertainer characters to run the quests and trade the rewards.

  • Trading Card Game Loot

"Loot Cards" award items that can be redeemed and claimed by characters in SWG.  These items are "No Trade" once claimed in game.  "Loot Cards" can be traded inside the Trading Card Game however.

Why?  - There has been no confirmation of the intention behind this behavior from the Development team.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items? - It encourages a basic participation in the Trading Card Game, rather than having players buy up all the loot items that they require without ever logging into the TCG.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - Not likely.

  • Jedi Cloaks and Robes

Many Jedi cloaks and robes are No Trade, but the cloaks available from the "Trials of Obi Wan" Expansion that are certified for combat level 80 players like the "Jedi Master Cloak", "Jedi Master Robe", "Robe of the Storm Callers", "Jedi Knight Cloak (Black)", "Jedi Knight Cloak (Brown)" and the "Cloak of the Kursk" are.

Why? - Most Jedi robes and cloaks are marked with "No Trade" because they are the same robes that were used in the old Force Ranking System where they were awarded at different levels, so were marked "No Trade" to keep ranks seperate.

When the Force Ranking System was removed, robes and cloaks were made lootable and the "No Trade" flag was not removed, it is simply a leftover mechanic.

The robes and cloaks that are tradeable were created after the removal of the Force Ranking System.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items?
    - No Trade could be said to now exists on robes and cloaks to ensure that a levelling Jedi participates in the profession specific content of hunting for their Robes and Cloaks.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - Yes, if the Development Team could be convinced to remove this restriction that originates from a very old system.

  • Veteran Rewards

Some Veteran Rewards have a "No Trade" flag, but some don't.

Why? - From the Veteran Rewards guide: "We recognize some players may not be interested in rewards, so we are allowing players the option to trade/give the reward items to other players. This way, players who are not interested in a given reward can sell it to another player in-game and get credits for the reward item (However, on occasion a few select items may require us to make them No-Trade). "

From Valara: "No Trade" criteria on veteren rewards is something that is "functional" as opposed to a decoration. Items like the hover chair, homing beacon, storyteller tokens, etc. all have a function and are No Trade; decorative items like the rugs, statues, carbonite, etc. are tradeable decorations.

Bug: Some accounts accrue veteran time without having an active subsciption.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items? -
Membership has its rewards, if the functional veteran rewards were tradeable, anyone could buy them regardless of their accrued subscription time, this devalues the worth of the reward to the players that are eligable to choose it.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - Possibly on a specific reward item, if a good case could be made.

    Homing Beacon.

  • Schematics from Mustafarian Instances and the Chu Gon Dar cube

The "Old Republic Personal Shield Generator" is a loot drop from the Operational Droid Factory, the Schematic is "No Trade", this means that in order to craft it, it needs to be looted by a Munitions Trader in the group, or the player that loots the item needs to respec to Muntions Trader.

Why? - The "Trials of Obi Wan" expansion used to be a purchasable expansion added to your base subscription, the schematics being No Trade meant that players had to purchase the expansion on their Traders account in order to benefit from the new content.

The same reasoning applies to the Chu Gon Dar cube and schematics generated from it.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items? - Gives traders content from the expansion.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - Yes, if the expansion was made a free download.

  • Anniversary rewards

Item such as The Five Year Anniversay Empire Strikes Back in-game painting,  Novaless Soni-Optics Goggles and Flower Bouquets from the Festival of Love are marked as "No Trade"

Why? - Prevents trading of these items to players that did not attend the Event.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items? - Rewards players for participating in an Event.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - Not likely.

    Novaless Soni-Optics Goggles

  • Glowing Items, Commendations and Midlithe crystals

Glowing Items and Commendations (from Restuss PvE+P missions) are tradeable, but the rewards created/purchased with them are "No Trade".  Midlithe crystals are "No Trade" but the rewards gained from them are Tradeable.

Why? - There are a lot of glowie items, storing them all would be very difficult if they were "No Trade", some items created from the the combinations are No Trade, but not all.

Commendations are Tradeable, which encourages players to gain even a small number of commendations, rather than just batches of 300 to purchase rewards with to sell (that is, if the rewards were tradeable instead of the commendations).

Midlithe Crystals are "No trade" because they are needed to advance in quests as well as for purchasing rewards.

What purpose does "No Trade" serve on this item/these items? - In this case, No Trade serves a unique purpose in each system.

Could "No Trade" be removed from this item/these items? - No, unless Trial of Obi Wan was changed to a free expansion, then the No Trade glowie combinations could well be changed to tradeable.

Recommendations:

  1. Investigate creating new craftable schematics for Traders using art assets used by No Trade decoration items.

    Such as:
    a re-assembled R2 unit

  2. Give "No Trade" Jedi Robes and Cloaks a small value for sale to Junk Dealers/Fences.  This was originally removed as Elder Jedi players were able to obtain unlimited Elder Robes from Altars and sell them for 5000CR each.
  3. Investigate possible bug where players cannot directly place a No Trade item into a container in structure that they are the owner of, they can however pick up the container, move the No Trade item into it and then drop the container again.

If you have any more questions on No Trade items or wish to clarify something, feel free to post!

Microservo Gloves - from Bossk quests - as well as factional armor (from recruiter) (only 2 that come to mind atm)

These gloves:

And the armour that can be purchased from faction recruiters at Major Rank and above.

Thanks.  Seems to me that the bio-link on these is certainly not needed.

Some notes....

Chapter 4.3: "Armed and Ready for Action!"
Publish Notes Thursday, January 4th

Galactic Civil War

  • Officer ranked GCW armor sets and weapons will no longer be unique so that you may display them in your house.

I assume the Bio-Link popped up after this change to remove the unique tag?

You could assume that, but you still have the redundancy of no-trade and bio-link in the same window.

I'm not arguing that this isn't a daft and redundant set of restrictions, just trying to work out how it got like that.

But in your picture, all 3 are there: bio-link, no trade and unique.

with wage of the rookies.

despite badger's best attempts to explain it away, it still sucks and the vast majority of players want no trade to go away and be replaced with bio-link.  servers teh same purpose, but at least then we can pass on crap we can't use (musty schems come to mind).

no trade needs to go, not be explained.

Probably an old pic, I'll find something more recent.

Probably good to use that pic as a reference of what was though.

No Trade

Prevents trade of an item to another player.

Bio-link

Prevents re-use of an item by another player.  Does not prevent trade of the item.

Two very different things, serving two very different purposes.

Replacing something like the low level Jedi robes and cloaks with bio link means the market is suddenly flooded with these items, so instead of hunting for their armour, Jedi can pick it up from a player vendor for 100cr.

What about restuss weapons and armor with the no trade tag, the items can be purchased by any toon in the form of comms , seems to be very inconsistant.

Also the crystals rewarded in space for the nova orion missions are no trade but all the rewards can be traded.

The no-trade tag on stuff like the respec kit make sense but it seems like a lot of no trade items would be better suited to an auto biolink.

how does the unique tag play into this ?

Commendations being tradeable and the Commendation Officer's rewards not being tradeable... encourages players to gain even a small number of commendations, rather than just batches of 300.

Midlithe Crystals not being tradeable but the rewards being tradeable...  seems the crystals are needed to advance in quests as well as for rewards.

Unique is there to stop you owning more than one of those items, the by-product is that you also can't drop it in a house, as you could potentially bypass this restriction if that were possible.
