Combat Roll Analysis: Critical Hit Defense

Reference: Combat Roll Analysis: General Overlook

The Critical Hit Defense modifier is a useful stat to reduce your attackers Critical Chance by a straight percentage. There are no core stats that will increase your Critical Hit Defense amount, so you can only increase it through Exotics, PUPs, and some expertise abilities.

The main stat on your statmod tab is called 'Combat Defense: Critical Hit Reduction' and 'Combat Defense: Critical Hit Reduction (PVP)'. 'Critical Chance Defense' is the modifier you want to look for if you plan to stack it. The modifier bit has a ratio of 4, meaning your Exotic Mods will have a maximum value of 8. 'Critical Chance Defense' can also be made into Powerups that can get around 28 - 30 'Critical Chance Defense' Value. How you 'Critical Chance Defense' value is converted into the 'Combat Defense: Critical Hit Reduction' Percentage is 'Critical Chance Defense' / 3. This means if you have +30 Critical Chance Defense, you have a 10% 'Combat Defense: Critical Hit Reduction'. The modifier 'Critical Chance Defense' is NOT subject to Diminishing Returns.

The way Critical Chance Defense works is it reduces from your attackers 'Combat Offense: Critical Chance' straight out. No matter how your opponent is stacking their Critical Hit Chance (whether that be through expertise, PUPs, Exotics, etc.), Their total 'Combat Offense: Critical Chance' is then subtracted by your 'Combat Defense: Critical Hit Reduction' percentages. You can decrease your attackers 'Combat Offense: Critical Chance' to 0%.

Strengths of Critical Hit Defense

  • Strong defense in PVP - With the changes in GU7, Critical Increase mods are all subject to Diminishing Returns. This allows a strong Critical Hit Defense stacker to potentially reduce a majority of your opponents Critical Chance to 0%. Critical Chance will increase the damage anywhere from 10-50%, so the less criticals the better.
  • Moderately easy to stack - There is no value modifier to stack on top of the core modifier, and because Diminishing Returns does not apply, Critical Hit Defense can be stacked high and not use up every slot on your exotics.
  • Reducing crits to 0% - One of the best things is that you can reduce criticals to a 0% I tested this with over 200 shots with 25% Crit Chance and 30% Critical Reduction and there was not 1 critical hit.
  • Glancing Blow becomes useful - Glancing Blow is negated by Critical Hit and Strikethrough. With this modifier stacked heavy, Glancing Blow can do it's job a lot easier.

Weaknesses of Critical Hit Defense

  • Not the best in PVE - Many high end PVE marks use a Punishing Blow system. This does not work against those kinds of attacks, but it still may be useful for when your attacker rolls a crit.
  • Relies on PUPs - Unfortunately, to get the most out of Critical Hit Defense, you need to use PUPs. Putting in 3 Exotics with Critical Hit Defense on them will only give you a maximum of 8%. Getting your powerups in the +30 range will make this modifier work great.
  • Limited ways to stack - The only way you can stack this modifier is Exotics, PUPs, and some profession's expertise. There are no buffs, foods, or other methods.

Ways to Increase Critical Hit Defense

  • Core Stats - None
  • Buffs - None
  • Food - None
  • Jewelry - None

Professions Strong Against

  • All

Professions Weak Against

  • Those that use Strikethrough (typically Spy and Bounty Hunter)

Professions Best to Stack it With

  • Combat Entertainer
  • Commando

Professions Hardest to Stack it With

  • None

Summary

  • Critical Hit Reduction - Reduces attacker Critical Hit Chance to potentially 0%
  • Critical Hit Defense - Ratio 4 (Exotics + 8 / PUPs + 28-30)
  • Other - Combine with Glancing Blow for maximum effectiveness

Completing Tusken Army Heroic gives you a +.66% to CHD i think, up to 10 times (6.66%).

Yea i just checked this.

My above statement is wrong because i counted in my Officer Tactics buff. Without the buff, i have 3,33% CHD, with it i have 6,66%. The buff says that it increases my CHD value by 10.

That should mean that the Tusken Army Heroic increases the CHD value by 10 too, but 10 means 3,33% and not 6,66%.

So basically every defensive aspect in this game outwieghs the offense? So basically if you are a single target offensive class then a defense class always has the better % chance to win......

good job SOE.

You can stack crit chance over 100%, you cannot stack CHD that high.
