Multi Core Update

Discussion in 'Performance Support (Video, Sound, Crashing)' started by ARCHIVED-Securain, Nov 13, 2007.

  1. This is from the patch notes.
    Multi-core CPU Support: If you have a Multi-core CPU you no longer have to manually set their processor affinity! EverQuest will automatically assign itself to an available core. If you run multiple copies of the client, each new copy running will assign itself to the next available core. Those interested in customizing which core or cores EverQuest clients run on, check the forums.
    I may be blind but I don't see anything in the forums about this. I have a dual core processor and had to download the affinity tool. Will I need to do anything with that? Or do I just log in as usual and both accounts will automatically go to a different core? What causes a core to be deemed "available" by EQ? When I box, nothing else is done on this PC. So I would think that I want each instance running on a separate core. If I am mistaken, please enlighten me. I had no idea this was being worked but this became the most exciting feature to be included in this patch for me. Thanks for working on this and hopefully it will be a smooth transition.
  2. I was running without much problem on both cores. I'm also looking for the information on how to disable the automatic setting of the affinity to 1 core. Does anyone know where this is posted?
  3. "i'm also looking for the information on how to disable the automatic setting of the affinity to 1 core."

    i think the patch message is a way to mask it to say "no longer will people be able to cheat by using both cores resulting in their character moving at ungodly speeds". therefore, you wont find a way to prevent the automatic affinity setting.
  4. I would hardly call that a cheat. When it happened to me I had little to no control over simple thigns, like turning. let alone trying to reach somewhere. And that was assuming i didn't crash before i tried zoning, which i would then crash.

    But I'm also unable to find the post it mentions here in the patch message:

    "Those interested in customizing which core or cores EverQuest clients run on, check the forums."
  5. Still unable to find anything on this. I am not noticing anything better. Same lag in same places. Actually seems like i am zoning slower. Any ideas?
  6. Within your EQclient.ini you will find the dual core setting switch for which core to be set and locked for that particular instance of EQ installed (I think that's how it works anyway) -- it's right after the westbugfix item and also just before you see the display setting sizes.
    I have not experimented since honestly with my dual core and even quad core both Intel, I never had to install any patch and EQ always ran beautifully for me. I have to admit that originally, yes it seems that both my accounts were run from the first core and the second rarely got any action.

    Ok, from this am I guessing correctly that I need to have 2 separate instances for EQ installed on my PC? I 2box using the same EQ folder. I just change the name and password depending on which account I wish to log in.
  8. My quad core AMD chip computer used to assign my two instances of eq to two different cores. But now with the patch, both instances are assigned to the same core. This is a huge pain, resulting in much slower zones and much worse performance on the backrounded instance of eq. I certainly hope there is a fix to this, and that the fix doesnt involve having two different installations of eq on my machine. I run both instances from the same folder.
    What is involved in running each instance from a different folder? I really hope sony can fix this or tell us how to just turn off this feature.
  9. Securain, please post the actual line information that you are referring to. I hate to say it, but I dont have anything resembling what you said would be between westbug and display options. I have searched my EQClient.ini for the word core and CPU with no matches. So clarify so I can experiment please.

    I am having terrible problems with EQ1 affinity setting 4 of my 6 accounts to only 1 of my 4 CPU cores (quad core cpu) and this results in terrible performance.

    Thanks
    Ron
  10. Also, in task manager I am unable to manually set any account's affinity to any core. I get a message that says its not allowed (or something like that). Im running XP Pro x64 and I cant figure out why I cant manually set each account to my choice of CPU Cores - so if anyone can help I would appreciate it as the Task Manager is not allowing it.

  11. DisableWestBugFix=1
    CPUAffinity0=1 < 0 is 1st core, 1 is 2nd core.

    Do you have a directory for each account?
  12. Thanks for the clarification. No, I do not have a directory for each account, I run them all from the same install. Here is what my EQClient.ini looks like now that I found what you told me to look for. If it helps, EQ is rotating my accounts to different cores (just not well) so these #s are not binding them to the CPU Core as would be expected.
    CPUAffinity0=0
    CPUAffinity1=1
    CPUAffinity2=2
    CPUAffinity3=3
    CPUAffinity4=0
    CPUAffinity5=1
    Here is the error message that I get when I try to manually set the affinity via the task manager:
    The opperation could not be completed, access denied.

    Advise me what these CPUAffinity #s should be and Ill change them if it will solve the problem.
    Thanks,
    Ron
  13. You have all of those CPU affinity lines in your eqclient.ini by default?

    Delete eqclient.ini and allow it to rebuild your EQ, log in each account. Log out completely from all of them then post your eqclient.ini.

    And aye, you can not change the CPU affinity setting on eqgame.exe, it has/had to be done on the Launchpad.exe/everquest.exe.

    But once you post the eqclient.ini (so I can get a clear view of how EQ is adding the lines), you could try a workaround and use WinXPLauncher.exe (located at majorgeeks.com
  14. The syntax of this "CPUAffinity" parameter is simple:

    CPUAffinityX=Y

    X counts the running EQ instances, beginning with 0.
    Y is the assigned CPU core to the specific EQ instance.

    For the first time, EQ automatically assigns all "new" instances to the next CPU core, beginning with 0. If all core's are used up, EQ restarts with Core 0.

    So Your, Rvalts, EQClient.ini lines ...
    ... mean you had run 6 clients at once, the clients 1+5 and 2+6 shared the same core.

    If you now have problems you can FORCE EQ to use specific cores. Just change the value after the = to the wanted core (counting begins with 0).
  15. *offtopic* Hmm, it seems this forum doesn't understand the
  16. Ok, now Im really frustrated. I moved my eqclient.ini as suggested, and after rebuilding it, has NO CPUAffinity settings listed whatsoever. However, the EQ behavior has not changed, that is, EQ is moving my (6) accounts around only 2 or 3 cores of my quad core CPU every 10-15s. And every 3rd to 4th shuffle, 4-5 of the EQ accounts is on the SAME core - making EQ unplayable. The EQ accounts are NEVER spread across all 4 cores and who knows why they are rotating when they dont need to. I can say this with absolute certainty, each CPU core can handle up to 3 accounts no problem, its when the 4th account is on it when I get the unplayable slowdown. So, having account 1& 5 on the same core and 2 & 6 on the same core does NOT slow anything down. Again, the problem is that the accounts are rotating cores (unequally) and somehow Im getting 4-5 accounts on 1 cpu core every 3rd-4th shuffle /boggle.
    Also, I previously used WinEQ2 to handle affinity before EQ indroduced their own (broken) affinity system. I had no problem 6 boxing with WinEQ2 (for 6 months) handling the affinity whatsoever. However, the new EQ affinity has somehow overridden WinEQ2 and they dont work together nor does EQ affinity work with WinEQ2 off. If only there was an option to turn off EQ Affinity so that I can return to using WinEQ2's affinity...
    Im perplexed at why my eqclient.ini did not rebuild my affinity settings at all. I will post my full eqclient.ini below, but trust me when I say there is no CPUAffinity there.
    Im still looking for help and suggestions. Having maintained 6 accounts for 6 years, paying the monthly cost and the cost for each expansion for all 6 accounts is very expensive only to have this feature break my EQ nirvana. This is enough to make me want to quit EQ completely.

  17. Looks like this:
    CPUAffinityA=X A = the number if that instance X = Core number
    So, if you play 6 instances using the same EQ folder, you sould set it like: (quad core)
    CPUAffinity0=0
    CPUAffinity1=1
    CPUAffinity2=2
    CPUAffinity3=3
    CPUAffinity4=4
    CPUAffinity5=0
    If you play 6 accounts using different EQ folders, you should set it like :(quad core)
    In EQ folder_001:
    CPUAffinity0=0
    CPUAffinity1=0
    CPUAffinity2=0
    CPUAffinity3=0
    CPUAffinity4=0
    CPUAffinity5=0
    In EQ folder_002:
    CPUAffinity0=1
    CPUAffinity1=1
    CPUAffinity2=1
    CPUAffinity3=1
    CPUAffinity4=1
    CPUAffinity5=1
    In EQ folder_003:
    CPUAffinity0=2
    CPUAffinity1=2
    CPUAffinity2=2
    CPUAffinity3=2
    CPUAffinity4=2
    CPUAffinity5=2
    In EQ folder_004:
    CPUAffinity0=3
    CPUAffinity1=3
    CPUAffinity2=3
    CPUAffinity3=3
    CPUAffinity4=3
    CPUAffinity5=3
    and so on............... CPUAffinity0~5 means no matter what order you log that account on, you always assign this EQ instance to that core.

    These are my GUESSES, feel free to correct it.
  18. Sorry for the errors in my post above, hit submit before I review it myself...

  19. I would just like to add that this change really lowered my boxing performance for whatever reason. I wish there was a switch to just go back to the old style... let windows choose what it wanted to do. On my Core meter my processor isn't being balanced anymore in usage. Before the cores balanced and the game ran perfect. Thanks Sony!
    I would have posted long ago but I wasn't using the forums at the time. I can still play the game, but no longer can I box more than 4 without lowering settings on my laptop. Any chance of reversing this or putting in a switch to turn it off?
  20. Thanks for bumping this. I was looking for this post. I'll be trying it out.
